About Adobe Acrobat Reader

Adobe Acrobat Reader is a program that allows you to access PDF (Portable Document Format) files. It also allows you to print, fill out, and submit forms that are in the PDF format.

Acrobat Reader is required to access some of the information on the Distance Degree Programs Web site, some of which will work only with Acrobat Reader version 5 or 6. You can download the latest version from the Adobe Web site as described below or you can load a copy of Acrobat Reader (version 5 or 6, depending on when the CD was created) from the Student Computing Center CD distributed by DDP.

How to download Adobe Acrobat Reader

Get Acrobat Reader

Once at this Web site, just follow the steps provided.

Step 1:

  1. Select the language you feel most comfortable using in the place where it says "Language."

  2. Where it says "Platform," select the operating system that your computer uses. If you don't know what platform your computer uses to operate, you can go into the "Control Panel" and choose "System." Here it should tell you. Another way to determine your platform is when your computer is turned on, one of the first screens that appears during the process of starting up should say what your platform is.

  3. The "Include option for searching PDF files" box can be marked if you want this option. It does take longer and it is not essential for using Acrobat Reader on this Web site, so the decision is up to you. If you don't want this option, leave the box empty. If you do want this option, mark the box.

Step 2:

  1. Click on the word "Register" to register your copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader. It is not required that you register before you can download, but it only takes a second and it keeps you informed about changes and new downloads for Acrobat Reader.

  2. Once on the registration page, fill in the fields marked with "*" because these are mandatory. Toward the end of the registration form, there is a field in which you can place your e-mail address. Please note that unless you check the box below it, by giving your e-mail address, you are giving Adobe permission to e-mail you from time to time with information about Adobe products.

  3. When you click on "Submit Registration and goto step 3" you will return to the "Get Adobe Acrobat Reader" page.

Step 3:

  1. Click the red "DOWNLOAD" button at the lower right-hand corner of Step 3. You will be taken to a download page.

  2. A window will come up that says "File Download." Here, choose "Save this program to disk" and click "OK."

  3. Now choose where on your computer you want to save this program. Make sure you put it someplace that you will remember and change the file name to something that you will more easily recognize and then click on "Save." It could take a few minutes for the file to save.

  4. When the download finishes, click on the executable file icon. This will "unpack" Acrobat Reader and then bring up an Acrobat Reader Set-up page. Be sure to exit all other programs before beginning the set-up.

  5. To begin the set-up, click "Next" on the initial set-up page. Be sure to read all of the information before continuing. Read the agreement and then click "Accept" if you wish to continue. Chose the folder in which you want Acrobat Reader to be installed, then click "Next." It will take a minute to install these files. Then a notice thanking you for installing Acrobat Reader will appear and the installation is complete.
